Haramaya University has provided the following institutional services and facilities to the CSAS MSc and PhD students before and after their arrival to the university campus. These facilities and services are also accessible to any person with special needs. Below are pictures of the CSAS scholars at Haramaya University.

Accommodation

Haramaya University’s Africa Center of Excellence for Climate Smart Agriculture and Biodiversity Conservation made a prior arrangement with the university’s housing service, and booked housing units on the main university campus. Each of the CSAS scholars is hosted in the university’s accommodation facilities.

Visa, travel and welcoming

Support was provided to the CSAS scholars during their application for an entry visa. This includes contacting the local immigration and citizen services, providing a confirmation letter (see attached) containing the names of the CSAS MSc and PhD scholars to the immigration officers. Since most of the scholars qualify for a visa-on-arrival, this facilitated an easy entry. Travel information was also provided to the CSAS scholars priori to their departure for Ethiopia. This information included travel documents, local contacts, currency, local time, power plug etc (See attached document). Airport pick-up service was also arranged to safely transfer the scholars to their accommodation units. Moreover, initial orientation was provided to them, together with campus tour, to enable them familiarise with the culture, language, food, and other aspects of life at Haramaya University. This is believed to enhance their integration into the society and foster understanding of the diversities that they are expected to navigate through.

Residence and research permit

The CSAS scholars were also provided with support in their application for residence and research permit. The Center arranged vehicles from campus to Dire Dawa immigration and citizenship service office. They were also facilitated with the settlement of costs for the application.

Banking services

All the CSAS scholars were provided with support in opening of a bank account at a local branch. Their scheduled scholarship stipend was also transferred to their account.

Classrooms, library, labs

The university facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries etc were also made ready to enable successful education and teaching activities of the CSAS scholars.

Research support (supervisors/advisors)

Arrangements were also made to assign research advisors and supervisors to each of the CASA scholars. This was done in line with their research thematic areas and expertise of each potential supervisor.

Health facilities

The university’s higher health clinic is informed about the arrival of the CSAS scholars for any immediate health issues. Haramaya University’s Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital is also located in Harar city to provide all the needed health and medical services.
